Nov 04, 2009 (MarketNewsVideo.com via COMTEX News Network) -- The wireless phone service war is headed to court.
AT&T announced last night it is suing Verizon Wireless over its There's a Map for That ads regarding 3G network coverage.
AT&T's suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, alleges the exclusive carrier for iPhone wireless service has suffered irreparable harm as a result of the TV ads, and seeks a permanent injunction.
The ads show a U.S. map highlighted in red for areas of Verizon Wireless' 3G, high-speed data network coverage, and in then blue, presumably for AT&T's coverage area, which shows fewer highlighted areas, along with the words If you want to know why some people have spotty 3G coverage, there's a map for that, too.
The ad, of course, mocks Apple's (AAPL) iPhone commercials that have the motto There's an app for that.
Verizon did add a clarification at the end of the commercial, after initial complaints from AT&T, that voice and data service is available outside 3G coverage areas, but that apparently was not enough for AT&T.
Verizon says the suit is without merit.
